How ROI is calculated

Return on investment is ROI = (final value − initial investment) ÷ initial investment × 100%. It shows the total percentage gain or loss.

When you enter a holding period, the calculator also shows the annualized ROI — the equivalent yearly return — using (final ÷ initial)^1/years − 1. This lets you compare investments held for different lengths of time.
