Binary vs decimal units

This converter uses binary units, where each step is 1024 of the previous one (1 KB = 1024 bytes, 1 MB = 1024 KB, and so on). Storage manufacturers sometimes use decimal units (1 KB = 1000 bytes), which is why a "1 TB" drive can show as roughly 931 GB in your operating system.
